Broker Development Program
Colemont’s Broker Development Program will prepare individuals for a career as an insurance broker. Participants in the Broker Development Program will learn about the insurance industry, excess and surplus lines products and strategies, principles of negotiation, and relationship building. This is an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated individual who has the ability to blend marketing and technical insurance skills.
Career Path
Chosen candidates will have a defined career path that is structured from the ground up to teach them about all aspects of the excess and surplus lines business.
Colemont’s Broker Development Program will take an individual with little or no insurance experience and give them the knowledge and training to become a successful broker. Our hands-on apprenticeship approach to broker development leads a candidate through the program in the following manner:

You start at an entry level position that combines practical work experience with on-the-job training so you learn the basics of the surplus lines business and serve as a productive member of the office with direct involvement in brokerage transactions.

From there, under the guidance of an experienced broker, you learn the technical aspects of the underwriting process, analyze coverage terms and conditions, match risks with market appetites, and negotiate rate and price for new and renewal business. You will also develop meaningful relationships with retail agency sales and servicing personnel and insurance company underwriters.

As a broker, you will be one of the select individuals in the office responsible for producing revenue for the company. The training program is designed to provide a new broker with the technical expertise, market relationships, sales training, and office support to reward a self-starter with a drive to succeed. Successful candidates will get the tools and staff to build and maintain a book of revenue producing business with no ceiling on income potential.
Skills
Time management, efficient work habits, and the ability to work well under pressure are critical to success, as are strong organizing, multitasking, and prioritizing skills. Sales personality, self-motivation, and professional drive are required, as well as the ability to learn, digest, and apply technical insurance material quickly. A candidate must demonstrate exceptional oral and written communication skills and a commitment to follow-through, customer service, and attention to detail. A desire and ability to travel within the U.S. is required.
Education/Course of Study
The ideal candidate for the development program will desire a position that is both analytical and sales-oriented; must possess a bachelor's degree in Risk Management & Insurance, Finance, Business Administration, or 1 to 5 years of equivalent work experience. Experience in a prior insurance internship is a plus.
